Board Meeting will be this Thursday the 17th of January, 7:30 am at IHOP on Samish Way.

IMPORTANT DATE --- On Thursday, 12 February 2009, at Anthony's Hearthfire Grill, we will be holding our FIRESIDE meeting. It will be from 1730 to 1900 hours (that would be 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM). This meeting is designed to inform new members all about our Bellingham Bay Rotary Club, and we are asking that all new members joining our Club during Orphalee's presidency (1 July 2007-30 June 2008) as well as our current year (known as Tim McEvoy's Reign) be there for this most informative 90 minutes. The Board of Directors and some 'old timers' will present valuable info about Our Club. More info to come.

Bucks in the Bay
Lance Calloway for a trip to CA, finalized his son's adoption, and a birthday!
Curtis Dye for missed meetings, thankful for no problems at his house from flooding;
Dan Pike thankful it's not snowing or raining anymore;
Patti Imhoff missed the weather while in HI;
Harold Scott had 65 birthday bucks for the Foundation, and a Panama Canal cruise with a few other Rotarians on board;
Christine Palmerton missed the flooding while in Cabo San Lucas with Lesa Boxx (no doubt having fun and causing a few minor international incidents);
John Templeton thankful for no flooding at his house, but sustained major damage to a house he had listed, and he recently MC'ed at realtors' gathering.

"Frank Zurline" fines for all those who missed the bad weather while in tropical climes, Stephanie for a closed school during the flooding, Stan Dyer, Steve Brummel, Lance Calloway, Mayor Dan, and finally some trivia about presidential inaugurations.

Program Dr. Curt Smith talked about the ABCD Dental Program (Access to Baby and Child Dentistry), which our club has supported over the years.

ABCD focuses on preventive and restorative dental care for Medicaid-eligible children from birth to age six, with emphasis on enrollment by age one. It is based upon the premise that starting dental visits early will yield positive behaviors by both parents and children, thereby helping to control the caries process (tooth decay) and reduce the need for costly future restorative work.

The Bellingham program was started in 2000, with about 6,500 low income children eligible. The State compensates the dentists at a "break-even" level. Early childhood caries (tooth decay) affects low income children in particular. It is a national epidemic. 20% of the kids account for 80% of the problem. It is often a result of families that don't understand the importance of dental care and/or can't afford it.

Katie Mehan, the dental access coordinator for the Interfaith Community Health Center, talked about the DADS program (Donated Adult Dental Services). The objectives of the DADS clinics are to provide a venue for volunteer dentists to serve low income adults. This helps reduce visits to St. Joseph's emergency room. Donated services last year totaled $130,000 in value, there were 537 encounters, and 38 volunteers participated. Our community needs DADS because many people simply do not have dental insurance and have no dental care.

Instead of mousetraps, what about baby traps? Not to harm the babies, but just to hold them down until they can be removed."
