The Weekly bit of Humor:

From our President, Tim. Because of the hubbub going on in Washington D. C. this day, President Tim evidently did not want to detract from the Inauguration Ceremonies!! -- So no Joke this week ---SORRY!!!

Invocation and Flag Salute

by John Templeton (it might be mentioned that John placed the Invocation ahead of the flag Salute, and rightfully so. He stressed the importance of this day in the History of this Country and world, and how the recognition of our 'Old Glory' should be made thru his invocation.

The Raffle:

As you know, we sell Raffle Tickets each week, and the proceeds of those sales are one half for the winner and the other half goes to The Rotary Foundation. They only cost a Buck, and we encourage all to be involved --- it only takes One Dollar. Also, good to mention that the record seller for this event is our member of 22 years, John Sleeth. The meeting of 6 January John hustled $107 worth of tickets (and that would be about $45 more than the average weekly take), and then, this week he managed to sell some $94 worth of tickets  John, you are the 'most'!

New Member Applicant

At the Board of Directors Meeting of 15 January 2009, the Board approved the Membership Application for Wendy Keniepp, owner of a Company by the name of Room2Think. This is an Event Planning Company, and it has been in the Community for about three years. Her sponsor is Lance Calloway with a support team of Tim Krell and Gary Barnett.  If you do not feel that Wendy should be a member of our Club, you must send a signed letter to the Board of Directors stating the reason you do not feel she would be a good member.

Visiting Rotarians:

John Moles was here to celebrate the 'Big Daddy Club' along with Bill Hastings; and then there was Larry Polllett from the Whatcom County North Club, and as we all know, Larry is our Assistant Governor this year, so he was there to receive his free lunch as well as to check on us!!

Guests:

Two very important 'Guests' were sitting at the far table where the Raffle Tickets are sold and the Secretary sits, and those two were Ellen Thompson (Archer) and Archie Thompson; (by the way, Ellen is G. Dennis Archer's daughter {who was filling in as Secretary while dad  was off studying more on the 2009 Tax Code} and Archie is Ellen's son who will be 3 years' of age come the first week of February!). I think we should nominate Ellen as an Honorary Member of our Club!

Please Note this Important Date:

On Thursday, 12 February 2009, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM, at Anthony's Hearthfire Grill (next to the Bellwether Hotel), we will have our Fireside Meeting. It is designed to give our new members a peek at how our Club is operated. It is a must meeting for any member who came into the Club since 1 July 2007. Also, the Board of Directors will be there to help educate us on what is going on in their Avenue of Service. Please let Stan Dyer know that you will be there---either a phone call at 398-7398 or my E-Mail, cncdyer469@aol.com.  Oh yes, this is an official Make-up for attendance purposes.

Bringing in a New Member:

We are all pleased to welcome into membership our newest member, and that would be Tresha Dutton, Ph.D., a Senior Faculty, Communication Studies Outcomes Assessment Coordinator with Whatcom Community College (Tresha, that is the last time we will mention your lengthy Title and we might even overlook the Ph.D as well!). Christine Palmerton, Tresha's Sponsor, gave a glowing resume of Tresha, and Past President Barry (Mr. Grapes & Gourmet) Kramer installed her in a most orderly and informative fashion. We welcome Tresha, and do hope that all of us will take a moment or two to acquaint ourselves with her during the coming weeks.

Bucks in the Bay:

Bill (Fire Chief) Boyd offered to drop in a few bucks because he just happens to have a most outstanding son who was honored recently, and because he spent some time in dousing a fire or two--oh yes, his offer to donate a dollar or two was gratefully accepted.
Gerald Baron placed a Fin or two in the pot, and this was in recognition of the book that was brought into our midst regarding that interesting patriot who gave us a program a few months' past . You remember, the gentleman who was a recognized (and honored) pilot during the Big WWII.
Bill (chomping at the bit to be Club President) Gorman, added to the pot so that he could proudly mention that his son was in Washington, D.C. for the Inauguration.
Tonja  (who is also chomping at the bit to be Club President) Myers very proudly mentioned that one of her daughters living in Alaska was also at the Inauguration, and that cost Tonja some Alaskan Pallin Dollars!.
Ron (who doesn't ever have to chomp at the bit to be Club President 'cause he has
already done his stint) Hardesty discussed his dad and how he had brought up Ron during his formative years and that he was pleased with the outcome.;
Mimi Ferlin, standing at the podium with that  certain Mexican sun tan that seems to be often noticed on our rich Club Members, related to us her experiences down there in 'Old Mexico where she had a belt or two, spent some time in the sunshine and came across another well suntanned member, Cy Lindberg, who is not lost, and will return just as General Mac Arthur once did; and we noticed that Mimi graced the Foundation coffers with a very large piece of US Currency;
Lynn Templeton stood before the eager audience, and related that he would reluctantly give up his past three year assignment on the Grapes and Gourmet if any
takers wanted it, and I noticed that Bob Jones raised his hand, Lynn, so give 'good Old Bob' a call --- quick!
There were probably more that confessed to situations and gave up one or two Simoleons, but I just plain old missed them because this new camera I have has a definite mind of it own, and I must make it behave!

Sergeant at Arms:

Bill (not wanting to be President again) Unrein, managed to stand before us as though he were a retired US Army Drill Sergeant , and nail a few of us for our hard earned bucks, and that even included our President Tim who was noted for not having a Flashlight for our Program of last week, and that would be Curt (Hey, I was President of this Club before some of you were born) Smith; well, that's a 'naughty-naughty, President Tim. Also, Speaker Smith had left his paper certificate on the table last week, so who should have been fined?
Bob Newell and George Bowen were nailed for their golfing prowess, and a few of us wondered how they were able to get on the Course with all of that recent snow and freezing weather -- Oh well, Old Golfers never die, they just like to hit their balls whenever they can! (Holy smoke, did I just say that!?).
Barry Kramer was mentioned and asked to drop a dollar or two on the table because he was out skiing and evidently could not recall if it were two or three days on the slopes or in the 'refreshment room';
Art Runestrand was hauled up on the carpet because he seems to be late for every meeting. Well, why not; Art has a class that he teaches on the far side of the County, and it doesn't let out until Noon---Come on Bill; give Art his money back---he is doing something nice for the Community, isn't he?
There were others who were mentioned, and their activities or sins cannot be recalled at this time---but you know who you are, and if you need to be mentioned, send a certified letter to Stowe Talbot and let him know that you want your name in print in the next exciting issue of The Soundings!

And then there was our Program:

Brad Jackson, Head Coach for the Western Washington University Basketball , was our speaker, and as he has done many times in the past, gave a great up-date on the team, the philosophy behind the Basketball Program, and he was also able to field any questions asked from the floor. He said that he had three thoughts that he would instill in all of the players: First,  it is a privilege to play for the University; Second, a player had a responsibility to play their best for the University, and Third, each player must know that they are representing something bigger than themselves. If the above takes place, then winning is a a by-product. Brad also went into the NCAA landscape, and how the University fits in to that Division II scheme of things.  All in all,l Brad was most informative, and he encouraged all of us to see a ball game or two -- we would definitely like it. By the way, young ass Brad looks, he has been coaching Basketball for some 35 years; 5 in a High School setting and 30 in the University level (25 of that being where he is now).

Next Week

Barry Seaton will be with us, and he will be discussing the "PR  for Rotary Clubs and our Club Assembly".

More
As of now, we will be having two couples from our Club going to the Rotary International Convention in England; one are Tonja Myers & Rob Slater and the other is one of our new members, Jim & Mariage Johnson. If you are able and interested in going to this great Rotary event, check with one of our Club Officers or the latest edition of the Rotarian Magazine.

Respectfully submitted
