Announcements

...Grapes & Gourment was reported on by three astute members: BARRY KRAMER, Leader & Wine Connoisseur; JACK GRANT, Restaurant Solicitor General and, HAROLD 'Scotty' SCOTT, Ticket Seller Extraordinairre. Initially, BARRY stated that everything was being worked on, and that there would be a meeting on Wednesday evening (12 October) at Sound Beverage for all of the Chairpersons; JACK GRANT mentioned that there were some 30 wineries on the list, and counting, as well as about 28 restaurants who will be bringing their sumptuous repasts, and HAROLD 'Scotty' SCOTT, who reported that there were 7 $100 tickets yet available, and more than 220 of the $75 tickets that needed to be sold. He also stated that some 45 members have not picked up any tickets nor have they commtted to buy same.!!! And that could mean Trouble in River City, folks. We need your cooperation in that this event is the major fund raiser this Rotary Year-- and every member must get involved and take those tickets.  All of the Net Proceeds from this Wine and Food Extravaganza will be used to support our Community efforts -- so, PLEASE, take care of this before we have given all of those who have been working so hard on this event the SCREAMING JEEBIES!

Other announcements:

...Board of Directors will be holding their monthly meeting on Wednesday, 12 October, and will be at the usual place and the usual time. If you want to obtain details on this event, contact G. DENNIS ARCHER, BILL UNREIN or anyone on the Board. If you do appear, you will not only be a welcomed addition to the Board Meeting, but also, you will be able to peruse some of the interesting documentation that our illustrious Secretary, DENNIS, puts forth each month. A rarity that only you will read when you attend.

Guest Rotarians included two dignitaries from the Bellingham Club as well as one from the Whatcom County North Rotary Club.

There were about three guests of Rotarians (didn't catch their names), but one was introduced by our illustrious Queen, CAROL BEECHER, who mentioned during her introduction that the introductee hopes to be a Rotarian soon!! What's with that, CAROL?

Bucks in the Bay:
...EDDIE (the bone cracker) HANSEN, for the great 'Crab Feed' event on his palatial Yacht;
...CHIP (The 'I'll see you next week') HILARIDES, who took off for the East Coast during the recent Club visit to his Georgia-Pacific Firm;
...GERALD (just call me gramps) BARON for his recent trip to Los Angeles, and discovered that his daughter was going to have a little one;
...STEW (what a dinner) ELLISON, who gave up a dollar or two for the recent Crab Feed on the HANSEN yacht;
...FRANK (I'm not that young anymore) ZURLINE, who had his 25th Anniversary in Carmel, and found that all was not the same as it was back in 1980! (please explain in detail what you meant by that, FRANK);
...BILL (don't cough on me) GORMAN, who was given medication for his recent 'walking pneumonia';
...BILL (Mr. Vol, himself) GEYER who managed to see the Tennessee vs Georgia football game, and the Vols took it where it hurts;
...CHUCK (what happened to my patients) WALTER, for his recent trip to 'Bean Town';
...CURT (tattle tale) SMITH, who finked on ELICH about some 'Hazardous Tape' around a vehicle (or something along that line);
...CURTIS (where are my Sergeant of Arms volunteers?) DYE, for his jaunt to St. Louis, and for scaring his poor wife by making her go up the famous Arch;
...and last of all, BILL (just call me Sir President) UNREIN, for being at the subway station in the 'Big Apple' when there was a red Terrorist Alert in that part of the world.

Sergeant of Arms
CY (give me a couple of bucks) LINDBERG hit a few of the unsuspecting luncheonaires for such things as signing up for the HANSEN yacht 'Crab Feed' Extravaganza, and not showing up; also, for those who did not sign up for the Georgia-Pacific meeting, and then did show up, making it impossible for a few hungry Rotarians to have their noon time morsels; hit ROBIN SCHMIDT for her recent tour to the Big Apple (sounds as though we could have had a Rotary meeting in them thar parts of the country last week), and her conversation with one of the characters on the Seinfeld Show; JOHN (4 handicap) HULBERT, for winning the recent golf tournament, and having just joined our Club; CHUCK (Mr Politics) WALTER, for bing involved with any kind of politics; STAN (what the hell was that about) DYER, for being on HANSEN'S 52 foot yacht, and not eating of his questionable crab!! There were probabley more who got nailed for a Two Dollar Bill, but I missed them?!

And the day's Program
Ms. Sandra Berner, Executive Director for the Whatcom Center of Early Learning, located on the corner of H Street and Girard, gave a most interesting resume of all that Organization does in our Community, and has done during the past 30 years or so. Ms Berner has been with the Organization for about one year, and after her 30 minute dissertation, it was obvious to all that she was in the right vocation. This non profit company takes care of youngsters who are from birth to about 3 years of age, and because of their arduous dedication to the tots, about 25% of the graduates are able to lead pretty much of a normal life -- what a great thing to have in our Community.

By the way, about two months' past, five of our Membership met there on H and Girard, and spent about 2 hours to assemble a play station for the youngsters, and that station was purchased with $2,500 of the $5,000 that the Club had recently donated.

They have a budget of about $365,000, and funds are obtained thru Grants, Births to 3 Program, donations (such as our Club gave), United Way, Special events and Parent to Parent activities.

They have three major areas of concern: they are, more Community awareness, strengthening of their Board of Directors, and Fund Raising events. If you would like, you could assist them by your individual efforts in fund raising or by being on their Board.

Polio Auction ROBIN SCHMIDT, had two tickets to the coming Seahawks Game as well as a night's stay at a fancy Seattle Hotel---and that was for the 23 of October. She requested DICK STARK assist her in auctioning off those two items, and the receipts would go to the Polio Plus Campaign. DICK started off the bidding at $100, and it was finally purchased for $250 by our rich Club Secretary, G. DENNIS (not the 'Menace" )Archer, and we all say a big "Thanks DENNIS".

Raffle
Lucky Number 659 was drawn, and I did not have that ticket - darn!

Well, enough of that which went on on Tuesday, 11 October 2005.
