Program
Tim introduced Arunas Oslapas, professor at WWU's Department of Industrial Design. Before WWU, Arunas attended BYU, worked designing furniture (cubicles) and also worked at an architecture firm in Chicago.

When he first moved to WWU, the Department of Industrial design was designing shiny new products from scratch. But now the emphasis is on creating items from recycled products OR products that can be recycled.

Some ideas concocted by him and his students include an electricity generator built into the road system and powered by car tires, an interactive "garbage park" on the site of former landfills, covered bycycle shelters (actually produced on campus), and many other useful household items. Some of the student-made items are on sale at IDEAL, a Bellingham store at 1221 Cornwall Ave.

He and his students worked with Huxley professor Nick Zaferatos on the re-use of shipping containers, designing housing.

He and his department also wrote a book called "The Waterbook" about the growing importance of water as a resource for mankind, and how to purify and/or collect clean water (by gutter downspouts, rain catchments systems, fog catchers, etc.). The book is available online in pdf format at www.wwu.edu/id/resources/WaterBook.pdf. Arunas recently used the book when he went with his students to a small Greek Island to work on a village redevelopment project there. They designed various housing types incorporating sustainable technology and design.

Another design projects they have worked on: Various refuge systems for water disasters (tree huts, floating rafts, etc.) Transitional/interim emergency housing for disaster relief in Bellingham, such as shipping container housing, yerts, simple compact housing systems.

Respectfully submitted,
Stowe Talbot

People need to realize that every time they talk about how "fragile" our planet is, it's just like asking outer-space aliens to come invade us.
