...On Tuesday morning (2/21/'06), about 1000 hours, STOWE TALBOT gave me a call and asked if I would be able to write The SOUNDINGS for today, and i, being a "Can't say NO" Rotarian, said YES!! ...So, here goes, the SOUNDINGS by STAN DYER!!

...With all due aplomb, our illustrious leader, BILL, commenced the meeting at 1232 hours, and MATT ROSE led the Flag Salute and our Invocation (and that was done with a lot of thought, incorporating the Rotary FOUR WAY TEST elegantly as part of the Invocation).

...Visiting Rotarians included Bill Gracee from Whatcom County North and Gerald Phumphrey of the Bellingham Club.

...Guest Introductions included one of ED Zech's sons as well as GERALD BARON's dad and his Son-in-Law (You are correct, 3 generations right at one table!!).

...ANNOUNCEMENTS included a reminder from STEVE BRUMMEL of the Basketball game on Thursday (2/23) with WWU and Humboldt State (from California)--some 31 have signed up, so it should be a real 'whistle burner'.

--- Also, EDDIE HANSEN reminded all of us of the blast that will be at Mt. Baker Theater on 1 April, and that will include dinner at Giuseppe's (price yet to be determined).

In addition, SARAH ROTHENBUHLER related information on the soon to be Rotario Dinners, the next one will take place at the home of TIM & Marcia McEVOY on 18 March, and the theme of that culinary extravaganza will be Irish. Other Rotario blasts for the future will be at the YOSTS with a Steak & Potato venture and at the GORMANS with an Italian theme. Call SARAH for reservations and information (734-5744 ex 101).

...BUCKS in the BAY (aka: 'Confessions')
President BILL tossed in a dollar bill for something or another;
BILL GORMAN a shekel or two for a recent trip to San Francisco (that would be in California);
JERRY SIMMONS (some BBRC Foundation dollars) for a recent skiing skiing trek and other personal items;
GERALD BARON, tossed in a few Euros to thank our Program Chair for asking his dad, Sid, to speak at our Club today;
ROGER LONG, submitted a draft from People's Bank (his own bucks, of course) to recognize his recent absence as well as info on his two sons, one of which opened a new restaurant in Providence, RI, and ROGER mentioned that he would be able to obtain a sizeable discount if you happened to drop in the RI spot for dinner. Also, son Number 2, for his recent weight loss trip to India;
BOB JONES gave an 'Aloha Dollar' for his six days on 'The Islands' with his son;
KEN OPLINGER offered a few tax deductible dollars for his recent trip to Washington, DC and Los Angeles;
CURT SMITH, 71 Big Ones for his 71 years on this here planet of ours -- and we all cheered!!

SERGEANT at ARMS, headed by LYNN TEMPLETON, managed to ask about 12 questions regarding the various U. S. of A. Presidents as to trivia about same, and only one managed to come up with the correct answer, and that was something along the line of our first President, and that would be Washington (George, that is). Evidently, the only one who had an inkling of a good answer was none other than BILL GEYER, and his response is still being confirmed by Senators and the White House. LYNN did a great job, and he may now be placed along side some of our best Sergeants, to include ROBIN, DALE, FRANK, PATTI and others of note!

Not to be overlooked: LYNN auctioned off four tickets to the Three Muskateers that will be on the 5 of March, and those $120 four went for something like $40 -- a real bargain. By the way, TONJA MYERS was the one who donated those tickets ...

PROGRAM--Our speaker was Sid Baron, (father of our own Gerald), and he gave us some stories of what it was like to be in the Netherlands during WWII, and the tragedies that were surrounding those nearly 6 years in the early '40's. A most moving 30 minutes, and many of his stories may be located in his recent book that is on sale at various Christian Book stores -- check with ORPHALEE for details.

...TRIVIA - dId you know that another famous TEMPLETON (JOHN, by name), was just married on 14 February, and his whereabouts are still unknown -- if you want to disrupt (in a nice way) his life, give JOHN a call and do that congratulation thing.

... Also, we should all make a real effort to become acquainted with our new members -- so far, we have had about 7 come into our Club since 1 July of '05, and they need to know that they are a very important part of our Bellingham Bay Rotary Club---how better to do that than by sitting with them and getting acquainted?

...DISTRICT 5050 items: We will be having our District Conference (along with district 5040) at Whistler, BC, Canada from 19-21 May of 2006, and our Governor, HARV JUBIE would certainly like our attendance. Why not get involved with that great event, and sign up. In the past, our Club has payed for the Registration, and hopefully, that will happen again.

...ROTARY INTERNATIONAL: There are over 1.2 Million Rotarians in 168 Countries in more than 32,000 Clubs -- and, there are about 527 Districts -- have you read this months' ROTARIAN?

Respectfully submitted - STAN DYER
