Flag Salute & Invocation done with 'Gusto' by ROGER LONG (aka banking magnate of Whatcom County!)

Visiting Rotarians: (introduced by our 'has been' President, BILL UNREIN) included three from the Whatcom County North Rotary Club, one of which was PETE KREMEN, our own County Exec.; another being GARY SNYDER, that affable member of some 23 years in Rotary and one other who wants to be known as anonymous---well, OK.;

Guests: Undoubtedly, because of today's speaker, we had an extra number of Rotarian guests, and some of those included two of KATHY CHETLIN'S daughters; STEW ELLISON'S daughter; a guest of ANNA WILLIAMS;TIM McEVOYS wife, Marcia and about five others that should have been recognized herein, but because of the lack of short-hand skills available by this week's Editor, their names were missed -- SORRY!!!

Student of the Month: Once again, we were honored  to have a Squalicum High School student present who was introduced by Mr. Faithful, GEORGE BOWEN (aka: an even bigger Banking Magnate than is ROGER-see Flag Salute section above) and Ms. Debbie Granger, who offered many factual items about Josephine Garcia the Student of the Month.  Josephine is not only an outstanding (Senior) at Squalicum, but also, she is the President of the Rotoract Club at the High School.  She has had that position for two years, and when she became President, there were some 35 members in Rotoract---now, there are about 85 members.  And, that group is involved in many, many activities that truly demonstrates "Service Above Self".  DAN WILKERSON has been working with the Rotoracts for many years, and he does need some help.  If you have that inclination, contact DAN---he would love to talk to you.  Josephine was given a Certificate of Recognition as well as a nice check; and that check should help as she progresses thru her studies to become a Physician.

Announcements:

According to STEPHANIE SADLER, the next Rotario Dinner will be at the home of TIM & Marcia  McEVOY
on 24 March of 2007, and the theme will be St. Patties' Day --- of course, your Green attire would be most appropriate for that festive evening.  And speaking of a great dinner, BOB and Donna JONES had the last Rotario dinner at their home, and attending were CY & Lynn LINDBERG, BOB & Irene NEWELLCURTIS & Felicity DYE and the JONES' son-in-law, Schuyler, who is a chef by trade and he produced a meal that will not soon be forgotten.

Bucks in the Bay:

...ORPHALEE S. placed a few 'start-up bucks' in the can when she mentioned her recent three day Rotary meeting in Seattle for her PETS week-end (PETS=President Elect Training Seminar);
...CHIP H. dropped $150 in the pot for our Foundation because of he will soon be away on business during the next few weeks (Don't forget to get those Rotary make-ups while absent);
...CURT S. came forth with a confession that netted a goodly sum for the Foundation---something about a birthday, new car or a new book that he is about to write!!??;
...STEW E. for his recent trip to Mexico, and some fun things about his daughter (who was present at the meeting);
...PATTI I., gave up two crisp Hamiltons for her trek to NY as well as another item or two that space herein necessitates a shortness of words;
...EDDIE H., about his great find at the Bingo Table---something about another cruise or something to do with water, boats, paddles and the like -- thanks EDDIE for your winning ways;
...Well, there were a few more items that were mentioned, but in order to keep our President, BARRY, in the dark, they will not be mentioned.  Oh yes, the reason ORPHALEE was in charge of the meeting again was because our peripatetic President is suffering with his wife on the Hawaiian Islands -- what's with that, BARRY?;

Sergeant at Arms:

That man of renown, BILL U. with glee, stepped up to the plate and nailed many of us because he was doing the PAY-BACK for all of the maligning that has been placed upon his all too delicate shoulders in the past year.  Well, here goes:

...LYNN T. for his trip to Seattle where he or one of his employees won a prize, made a U-Turn in the middle of the block or did a Jay-Walk hike on Pine Street;
...A  few admitted to seeing the play, Menopause (or is that minnow pause?), and anyone who liked it had to cough up a two dollar bill---seems that BILL did not like the results of that play at his home. (Wow, I must be missing something in taking these notes!!);
...All Past President who were at the meeting had to cough up a dollar or two because most of them (a total of nine were there on Tuesday) went to a better International Convention than did BILL.  So, what is wrong with the Windy City BILL---just because some of the Past Prez' had to go to Barcelona, Brisbane, Osaka,
Copenhagen, Buenos Aires, Singapore, Glasgow, or Calgary (just to name a few)---lucky that PP PHIL wasn't there---as you might recall, poor PHIL went to San Antonio where some 20 million Texans hang their Ten-Gallon lids;
...STEVE BRUMMELL was hit with a fine because the recent Basketball blast was cancelled; and STEVE being at the University in marketing was not able to 'market' the ball game well enough to make it a go---too bad, Mr.B.---wellllll, maybe next year!;
...DENISE B. was recognized for an offering because she wouldn't admit something or another;
...ORPHALEE S. for driving a 20 year ancient Taurus;
...All Cougar fans were hit for Big Bucks (a dollar, that is!) because of their Number 13 ranking in the Polls;
...All members who were fortunate enough to leave the cold parts of Washington and visit other nice spots such as Arizona, Hawaii, etc, were asked to tithe in their solicited offering;
...Well,, there were a few other fines that were missed, mis-stated or unimportant, so we shall eliminate them here in this edition of THE SOUNDINGS -- sorry, BILL U.

And now, THE PROGRAM:

2007 Miss Washington, KRISTEN EDDINGS, an Honorary member of the Poulsbo-North Kitsap Rotary Club, was our speaker, and all that heard this 22 year old young lady, were amazed at her speaking ability and the direction that she has taken for her life in the future.  She plans to be the US Ambassador to Japan in the future (the first woman Ambassador to Japan), and after hearing her for the 25 minutes she spoke, most all of the audience felt that she could very well have this ambition come to fruition.  Not only is Ms. EDDINGS an accomplished speaker, but also, she sings, travels, helps others throughout the world, and is dedicated to Rotary and our theme, Service Above Self.  She competed in the Miss America contest on 29 January, and she came in seventh.  If you missed the meeting, folks, you missed out on one of the best programs we have had this year.  Thanks be to TIM McEVOY and his secretary, Nancy, for bringing this program on Tuesday.

Reminder:

There will be a Rotary meeting on Tuesday, 6 March 2007, so hopefully, we will see you then.

Respectfully Submitted
