Program

In two weeks we will have tour of Aluminum Chambered Boats!

Homeport Learning Center director fell ill today, so we have substitute program courtesy of Gordon Plume: Gordon showed a stop-action video of the manufacturing of a recent project done by his firm, the GR Plume Company. In 1998 he first heard about the project from the architect: It is a series of beams (ribs) forming an elliptical dome 38 x 40 ft, and 19 ft tall. It was commissioned by the wealthy banker Edmond Safra of Safra Bank, who wanted the dome of the inside of a private synagogue in NYC. Safra was killed in a fire in Monaco soon thereafter. The project was put on hold, then restarted again by his widow in 2001. In all, it took a year to manufacture, at cost of about one $million, and completed on the fifth year after Safra's death. Shipped to NYC, where it was installed (June 2002), in the synagogue on East 63rd Street. A facinating story, and a beautiful finished product by the GR Plume Company. Thank you, Gordon!

Raffle won by Bill Geyer.
