Announcements

Charitable giving:  Barry introduced Mike Baker, Maritime Education Teacher from Homeport Learning Center, to whom our club gave $1000.  Homeport Learning Center has been around for 12 years; it's a small, private, non-profit program that operates 4 days a week 12 months a year. The HomePort Curriculum is designed to provide functional vocational and academic support to students who have been unsuccessful in mainstream high school programs. Students receive structured opportunities for hands-on learning in settings that reflect real-life work situations. Our money will go to support the construction of a 22-foot boat called the Stewardship, being built by the kids.  The boat will lauch sometime late summer, and will allow the school to do various projects/clean-up around the bay.

Steve Brummel: "Beer Fest" fellowship event will take place the first Sunday in August, the organizing committee will meet tonight at 5pm at Big Fat Fish;

Donna Edquist:  Update on "Pure Water" fundraiser luncheon May 6th at the Bellwether; tickets are $60 each and include lunch and raffle. Sign-up online: Click the "Upcoming Events" button to the left.

Program
Tim McEvoy introduced Sean Hogan from RLYA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). RYLA was started 25 years ago in Australia.  It's one of the best programs that Rotary supports.  RYLA is an annual 4-day "retreat" for 18-25 years old young men and women to learn about leadership.  The RYLA program for our District 5050 is comprised of about 65 youth and another 20 leaders and staff.  Each club can sponsor 1 or 2 people to attend (could be a student, an employees, a neighbor etc.).  Each club pays the the $400 fee for each of their 2 candidates.  This year RYLA will take place June 7-10 at Stave Lake, BC (near Mission BC).

What happens at RYLA?  The young people are divided into teams of 5 or so people. The groups are tasked with different projects which help them develop leadership, overcome shyness with public speaking, conducting various "legacy" projects, etc.  There is an adult organizing committee, but the program is really run by the the "Facs", which are a select group of young people who attended RYLA the previous year.  Prior to RYLA, the organizing committee devotes a two-day training session to the Facs.  Each RYLA program is unique.  It really gets the kids outside their comfort zone.
Friday is a bonding day;
Saturday is "stress" day;
Sunday is wrap-up day.
Each year there is an indoor project and outdoor project. We need to select candidates - potential leaders. Here is the RYLA application:
