Program by Curt Smith
Curt gave gave the facinating story of bothels in Bellingham, about which he wrote a book.  Curt had received most of his photos and information from the late Galen Birey, considered Bellingham's foremost historian.  Curt first published 1000 copies of his book and sold them out, then he published another 500 copies which are almost all sold out.  Brothels existed in Bellingham from 1880-1948.  There were 30+ houses between Bellingham and Fairhaven employing probably hundreds of ladies.  Curt showed some slides of photos from the early years of Bellingham.  Streetwalking was always discouraged, so the trade was conducted behind closed doors, very organized operations, with the girls even receiving weekly medical examinations.  In 1948, after receiving information that girls were being recruited for other cities, the FBI came in and closed the Gordon Hotel and all other brothel operations in Bellingham.

Curt's book is available at Village Books and Southside Haggen.
