By Stan Dyer (who is filling in for Editor, Stowe Talbot, who had a great game of golf last Tuesday!)

Meeting called to Order by our President, Tim (Short-Timer) McEvoy.

Invocation and Flag Salute by Mike (Mr. Hospice) Kirkland

Visiting Rotarians: Two members from the 'Big Daddy' Club included Ron Justin and Peter Self, one from the Whatcom County North Club, Ray George and one from one of the Clubs in Mexico, Jeanne McGee.

Guests: Wendy Keniepp had two guests (their names have disappeared from my notes!)!

New Member Applications: The Membership Committee, headed by our dedicated PP Jim McCallum, has approved the membership of three candidates, and this Membership Committee's action was also unanimously approved by the Board of Directors on 14 May 2009. These candidates are: Christopher White, Account Executive with Snapper Shuler Kenner (Insurance), sponsor is Robert Moles; Aaron Lemperes, Dentist, sponsor is Curt Smith; and Henry Lee, Commercial Loan Officer with Skagit Bank, sponsor is Stan Dyer. These names will be published in The Soundings twice, and if there is any member who feels that any one of these candidates should not be a member of Bellingham Bay Rotary, a signed letter must be forwarded to the Board of Directors, explaining why the candidate(s) should not be a member.

President's Joke of the Week: Our President Tim, after going thru many, many possibilities, came up with the following joke: Seems that this fellow played two rounds of golf every Saturday, and his wife was most irritated because he did not show up for his lawn mowing duties until after 1700 hours. He promised to do only one round on this Saturday, and he headed for home at noon (what a guy!). On his way home he noticed a sweet young thing on the side of the road, attempting to change her flat tire, and our main golfing character, stopped to help. He changed the tire; she was so appreciative that she invited him to her place for a belt (aka drink) and our golf weakling just could not resist. After about three hours of refreshments, etc. (use your imagination on the 'etc.'), he headed home and was confronted by his irate wife. Being the nice golfer that he was, he confessed to his wife all that happened (to include the sordid 'etc.' stuff!), and the wife, not to be duped by this 'far out' story, said something like, ".What a story, you bas----, I just know you played that second round of golf!" When Prez. Tim told it, he received a 63 on the 'laugh meter'!

Announcements: Head 'Honcho' Tim (short timer) McEvoy said that he would be using $500 of his discretionary funds as a donation from our Club to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters at their meeting tomorrow. Zachary Jones stated that the tickets for the Brewer's event will be available next Tuesday (5/26), and all of us are expected to take at least 10 tickets at $25 each. Eddie (the Fun Guy) Hansen, along with Lesa Boxx, passed out the awards for the recent Club extravaganza (that would be our golf outing), and it seems that everyone who played got some golf balls, tees and a pat on the back side! What a day! Lance Calloway gave accolades to those who participated in the last Saturday morning work party, and those included Lance (and four of his Soccer gang), Tim Krell, Matt Rose, Wendy Keniepp (and son Cedric), Tonja Myers, Stan Dyer, Ed Satuchek, Dan Moore and four young ladies from the Starbucks Coffee group.

Bucks in the Bay: Lance Calloway gave his applause to those who helped with the work party last Saturday, and dropped a few bucks in the can; Wendy Keneipp told a story about her 8 year old son, Cedric, who let mom know that he only listened to 70% of her jabber (say what?); Phil Hageman was there to drop a dollar or two for his birthday, and Stephanie Sadler noted that she was admitting to having a daughter who would be getting married soon. Mike (Mr. Hospice) Kirkland, recognized the $100,000 donation by St. Luke's Foundation, and while doing this, he had PP Sue Sharpe stand and recognized her leadership with St. Luke's Foundation. Mike also recognized the Hospice Board members who are in our Club. Anna (Ms. 'do everything') Williams then arose to the occasion and gave accolades to Senator Brandland for the work he has done in obtaining a $700,000 plus grant for Hospice. Christine (Our NautiGirl) Palmerton had something or another to say about her golfing. Others who stood to confess something or another included Stan Dyer, Mary Humphries, Vanessa Blackburn, Steve Spitzer, Eddie (the Fun Guy) Hansen and others.

Sergeant at Arms: Zachary Jones, with the vengeance of a banker, nailed all sorts of us for some infraction or another, and if you really want to know what some of those infractions were, please contact Zachary at 1-888/who-cares !

A Thought from President Tim: Our President mentioned that our last two fund raisers fell just a bit short for fund raising, and one of the reasons is that some of us are not carrying our load when it comes to financial support. As a member, we are obligated to do our bit in buying tickets, helping out for the event and supporting them 100%. He asks that all of us do our bit as a Club Member and as a Rotarian.

The Program: The program was a different sort, and the speaker, Robert Bystrom, founding Director of his Company, Collective Intelligence Solutions, let us know that his company was one that attempts to place different individuals on the 'same page' when it comes to different thoughts about the same subject. Also, he gave a hand out for all of us to exercise our brain power, and that created a slight 'stir' among the group. If you are wondering more about the program, forget about it!

Some Rotary Thinking: Governor Larry Stinson (a good Canadian, and a lawyer at that) has promised to give us a "..rip snortn' District Conference this year..", and it will be held in Chilliwack, BC and it will have a 'Western ' aura to it; so all who will be there to have fun (and learn something more about Rotary), will do some stompin' around in cowboy (or cowgirl, what the heck!) boots, large Rodeo style hats and have dinner right out of the Chuck Wagon on the plains of BC. The date will be May 28-31, and if it is not too late, you should toss in your hat and go where the action will be. Our Club pays for the Registration, and you foot the hotel bill (and if you don't have bucks for the lodging, arrangements can be made to stay at one of the Rotarian's home, free of charge)---you just can't beat them thar fixins', Podner!

Also, Rotary International will be having their International Convention in Birmingham, England, and the date of that blast will be June 21-24. More information on this is available thru the Rotarian Magazine or contact our President or President to be, Tonja Myers (she and her hubby will be flying over there to see how the English really are!!).

Board of Directors: Last Thursday morning (14 May) the Board met, and some 12 were in attendance. Some of the 'happenings' that took place included: Financial Report given by Orphalee Smith, and it was noted that we are in good financial condition; reading of the minutes for last months' meeting were waived; President Tim reported on the transition of Leadership, and that will be on 7 July at the Boxx Ranch on Northwest Avenue (more on this in June); Brewer's on the Bay will be 26 July, and tickets will be available on 26 May and the next Board Meeting will be at the home of our President on 11 June. Christine Palmerton, Club Service Director, reported that there would be another Fireside in the month of June, and also, she submitted the three names noted above for membership approval (that approval was unanimous, by the way). Stephanie Sadler, Youth Service Director, reported that the Scholarship interviews had been completed at Squalicum High School, and six recipients have been selected to receive our $1,000 (each) Scholarship; those fortunate students are: Dan Herda, Claire Delbecq, Kyle Hooper, Veronica Diaz, Lindsey Nakatani and Kyle Carlson. That Selection Committee included Stephanie, Kathy Cheldelin and Dan Wilkerson. Matt Rose, Community Service Director, related that there will be a 'hands on project' at the Soccer field on Saturday, 16 May as well as a forecast for the next project. Stew Ellison, Director of International Service, discussed our water project in Honduras as well as another Central American project. And that was most of what went on at IHOP on 14 May 2009!!

Here's One For You: How much larger is 4/4ths than 3/4ths? The first one with the correct answer will receive some sort of prize---or whatever!! If you are an Accountant or have ever taught math in school, you don't get to be a part of this event! The last 'prize' give-away was answered by just two members---Phil X answered it correctly on the 19th of April and Stowe Talbot hit the answer on the 20th!! Sooo, Phil got the prize!!

Respectfully Submitted,

Stan Dyer
