Announcements:

Bill Boyd reminded all of us of the coming Beer and Bust event that is on the agenda for Sunday, 5 August, and that tickets for this SPECTACULAR will be a paltry $25.00; and each member will be expected to sell (or buy) 10 of these treasures!!  Of course, more information will be in the offing, so be prepared.

Orphalee  announced that she presented some 6 Rotary Scholarships to deserving students at Squalicum High School, and that did occur on Monday evening, 4 June.  She was very pleased with the event, and stated that our 6, $1,000 Scholarships were more than appreciated.  Also, it should be noted that the recipients were: Sydney McDonald, Madie Neuman, Shiloh King, Mikel Johnson, Angela Dawdle and Jake Stick.  These 6 recipients were selected by the work of the Rotary Scholarship Committee, composed of Sarah Rothenbuhler (Chairlady), Stephanie Sadler and Stan Dyer.

Orphalee also announced that our President, Barry, was either in Eastern Oregon or Eastern Washington, working diligently on his golf game so that he could bring back all of that tax deductible experience to his Lake Padden Golf & Coffee Club---so,

Bucks in the Drink :

Dave Nichols coughed up a few Spanish Doubloons because of his recent sojourn to Spain and also for his art display somewhere here in the County (call the Judge for more info on this latter item);
Lynn Templeton donated a few buck in recognition of the great progress that is being made by the Ferndale B & G Club in the building of their new place---also, an added dollar because his sister-in-law is either coming to visit or is leaving (sorry, I missed that detail);
Ed Zech donated some real money in recognition of his sons accomplishments at Squalicum;
Ron Hardesty placed a few dollars in the bucket to announce that he had a great time at the recent Rotary 5050 District Conference at Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada, and that all of us should consider going to one of these Rotary events to learn more about Rotary and get acquainted with other Rotarians from the District---also, great speakers were there. Attending this event were Ron and his escort, Pam, Tim and Marcia McEvoy, Orphalee Smith, Barry and Anne Kramer and Stan & Carrie Dyer;
Bill Boyd offered some 'hot cartwheels' to recognize some of his Firemen and Firewomen who performed so very well recently in handling two conflagrations in the area;
Curt Smith gave up few dollars to recognize his 10th grandchild who was brought into this world on Sunday;
Mimi Ferlin donated some dollars to recognize the great influence that educators have on our children;
Robin Schmidt gave up a few dimes when she floored us by letting all of us know that she has been looking for MR. RIGHT for a long time, and she finally found him, and he now lives in the Schmidt's home with her---oh yes, MR. RIGHT is a nine week old male Schnauzer!!

Sergeant at Arms (with Robin doing the deed)

Denise Bosman was assessed a few dollars for her recent Porsche 911 that she now sports around town; Ed Zech was recognized for a two dollar donation for all of the notoriety he has received regarding his son the scholar; Donna Edquist was asked to drop a two dollar bill on the table for her not having the correct blue prints available anymore at her business; Bryant Engerbretson was asked to give a dollar for his 'running for office'---what? Matt Groenig was hit for some money for sitting on the wrong side of the room; Paul Leuthold was given the birdie for not playing with the BB Rotary Club Golf Team; Orphalee was hit for driving her 'Classic Car' around town (and we all wondered just what 'classic' meant!!) ; Then, our Sgt at Arms gave a 5th grade quiz to many of the tables, and it proved that 4 out of every 6 Rotarians could easily answer the 5th grade questions -- and we are so proud!! Those questions include something or another about Elvis Presley, Mt. McKinley, House of Rep. term in office, how many sides does a hexagon have, the Great Lakes, closest planet to the sun, etc. Nothing like boning up on those 5th grade questions, Sgt.!

Program

Desmond McCartle, interim President of the Bellingham Technical College, gave a very interesting program regarding the local Bellingham Technical College, to include some of its history, how it operates and the various kinds of programs that are available at the College. It was noted that their Board of Directors were still looking for a new President, and it just so happens that he was hired shortly after our speaker presented the program. It should also be noted that Desmond McCartle was the College's President for some 19 years during the last century! (the latter part of the century, of course!).

RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)

Our Rotary Club will be sending five young people to attend the RYLA program in Canada this weekend. they include Ron Hardesty's daughter, Claire; Bill Unrein's daughter, Megan, Jennifer Moore (an employee of Zachary Jones), Amy Lee (one of Ken Oplinger's interns at the Chamber) and Michelle Wendling (a friend of Kathy Cheldelin). Our thanks to those who have participated in this excellent Rotary activity, and hopefully, we will be able to come up with more candidates for next year.

NOTE

If you will be looking for our 'soon to be' President, Orphalee, during the third week of June (this year), you will be finding her in Salt Lake City, Utah, attending the Rotary International Convention, and while there, she will be learning all about the coming year of Rotary, and undoubtedly, she will be letting all of us know the real 'skinny' for 2007-2008 Rotary year.

Respectfully submitted,
Stan Dyer
