Flag Salute & Invocation: Led by Bill Unrein and prayer.

Announcements:
Mimi Ferlin presented on behalf of Patti Emhoff. IMCO has already donated $1000 to the Arthritis Foundation and is sponsoring a golf team. Mimi needed four individuals to comprise a team, many of whom already have significant handicaps. We won't list Barry's significant mental or physical. There will be a breakfast, lunch and dinner. The date is Aug 25th at the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. Mimi asked for those who play golf to stand and for those standing to make a donation for our Rotary to participate. Shannon said he would donate $100. Stew Ellison will donate $50 but will not play. Chuck Smith will also donate $50.

Visitors: Bob, Joe, Wayne and Alan from Bellingham Rotary. Blake Zender (Dale's son, age 12 and the better athlete in the family), Mrs. Smith (Curtis Smith's Wife), and Marsha McEvoy (Tim McEvoy's wife) both wives honored for making their husbands look like better men. One visitor from Whatcom County North.

Program
Tim McEvoy introduced UW basketball coach Lorenzo Romar.
About Head Coach Lorenzo Romar:
· In only three years, Lorenzo Romar has elevated Washington to the elite level of college basketball. The charismatic coach plans to stay at the top after putting together two consecutive recruiting classes that were rated among the nation's best.
· Romar begins his fourth season at Washington after directing the team to back-to-back NCAA Touranments in 2004 and 2005. That marked the fourth time that Husky teams made consecutive NCAA appearances.
· He guided Washington to a 29-6 record in 2005, tying the 1938 squad for the highest win total in school history. UW finished second in the Pac-10 standings with a 14-4 mark.
· After receiving their first ever No. 1 seed, the Huskies posted two NCAA Tournament victories and advanced to the Sweet 16. Romar, who led UW to its first conference tournament championship, was named the 2005 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and Black Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.
· He was rewarded following the fantastic 2005 campaign with an eight-year contract that will ensure he remains on the UW sidelines for a long time.
· Romar fashioned a spectacular turnaround during his second season when UW posted a 19-12 record in 2004 and participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.
· In 2004, Romar guided the Huskies to their first second-place regular-season finish since 1986 and their first Pac-10 Tournament championship game appearance since 1987.
· Romar is in his 10th year as an NCAA head coach after compiling a 151-123 record in his previous nine seasons. His three-year record at UW entering the 2005-06 season is 58-35.
· At Washington, he replaced Bob Bender who resigned on Mar. 13, 2002. Romar is the second former Husky player to return as the head coach. He joins Lynn Nance who played at UW from 1964-65 and was the Huskies' head coach for four seasons from 1989-93.
· Romar and his wife, Leona, have three daughters -- Terra, Tavia and Taylor. For more on Coach Romar's profile, visit:

Program:
Coach Romar highlighted some incredible upcoming freshmen ball players going into this year. Ryan Applebyâ¿¢the newcomer from the pac 10. They have only 1 senior starter and many upcoming youthful talents. UCLA and Arizona are expected to be very good ball teams this year. Oregon could also be right up there at the top.

Soon, they will be going to Gonzaga, then playing at Pittsburg. Pittsburg was 16â¿¢0 at home. At home, UW will play LSUâ¿¢who was in the final 4 last year. LSU lost only two players from final four team last year.

Questions:
What kind of style will you be able to play this team?
Very unlikely to play all three big men at the same time. Romar's philosophy is to "get quickness with as much size as possible." Another coach had a differing philosophy to recruit size over quickness. As this coach argued, "when the smaller players are tired and run out of energy, you still have size."

What generally do the players do in the summer?
I try to encourage the players to stay local in the summer so that they can complete their education within four years. Freshman have the opportunity to attend summer school and can graduate in four years. Players work out (lifting) and play pickup games Monday through Friday. Through May until "now" they play every day.

What is your perspective on the sale and the probable departure of the SuperSonics? If the sonics do leave, they will replaced by some kind of a team in future years.

Is Brandon Roy going pro after high school a good example for talented youth to follow? I believe so. Brandon stayed one more year and was the 6th picked. Brandon tried the NBA cause he could.

Could you provide some insight into how you work with kids with different backgrounds and different successes that they have had in previous years?

I was told once that "kid's don't care about what you know until they know how much you care." So, we try to develop trust and a relationship so they have a decent trust with us. When something isn't going right, we have trust as a foundation. Without that basis of trust, we cannot work with a wide range of personalities. Also, depends upon who you recruit in character.

What happened to Bobby Jones and Will Conroy? Bobby Jones signed a 2 year guarantee contract with Philadelphia. Will Conroy was very close to making the San Antonio Spurs. He was diagnosed with a stress fracture and didn't make the team due to that injury.

How's the game changed over time in your view⿦.what's new on the horizon?

The roles of the position are totally different. Walt Frasier was just a guard. Earl Monroe was just a forward. Then, players were designated as a point guard and nothing else. Dirk Norvinski or Labron James don't have a position and can make the play just like any other player in any other position. Also, more than 100 international players now intermesh with the rest of the world. Players are much more versatile.

The international teams have been successful. What's happening in the schools to improve the shooting?

When I was in Italy, they have "sessions" year around for one team only, such as for fourteen players. These players can be coached and play year around versus here in the US where there is restricted practice times and rules. Our teams have not respected international players and teams as much as they should have.

Ryan Appleby is such a great outside shooter. Any design plays for him to shoot more?

He's not the only good shooter. Other players are shooting well. Other coaches will say to other players that if Ryan gets the ball, you're coming out of the game. We run design plays for Ryan when possible.
