Program
Bill Gorman introduced Mike Sato, Director of Communications, Education and Involvement for the organization "People for Puget Sound". Its mission to protect the waters of the greater Puget Sound. This body of whater, also called the Salish Sea, is fed by the Frasier, Noosack and Skagit Rivers. This water basin is a very special place with countless varieties of plants and animals, in great diversity, due in part to the the rich nutrition in the water. Puget Sound is called a "fjord-like estuary" because of its depth carved out by glaciers in the last ice age: It's deepest point is 900 feet, average 600 feet. Several species are listed under the Environmental Species Act or are in decline: Orcas, salmon, rockfish, herring, and some marine birds. Some areas like Hood Canal (even Samish Bay) are "dead zones" hypoxic zones. Population growth is another looming danger for Puget Sound which will demand that we manage growth carefully. People for Puget Sound advocates action, education and advocacy. In Whatcom County they focus on several clean-up projects. For more information see:
