The 1,183rd Bellingham Bay Rotary Meeting commenced at 1236 hours on Tuesday, 30 August by President BILL UNREIN, followed by the Flag Salute and Invocation led by our own Invocator, ED Zech, and in his thoughtful prayer, he included serious comments about those in the Southeastern part of the U. S of A. who are suffering with the aftermath of that notorious lady, Hurricane Katrina.

Visiting Rotarian introductions were made by FRANK CHMELIK, and they included two, one from Mount Baker (the all male club!) and the other from the 'Big Daddy' club, Bellingham.  President BILL then called for guest introductions, and they included Past BB Rotary President, SUE SHARPE (1996-1997). JoAnn MOORE, ORPHALEE SMITH'S Administrative Assistant, LYDIA STONE, a former Rotarian from Southern California, and, JOHN HULBERT, a near future member of our Club.

Sergeant of Arms FRANK CHMELIK (always a good fine master!) hit a few for some dollars, including FRANK ZURLINE on who was guilty and should pay the 2 bucks; MIMI FERLIN for going into the wrong house with CAROL BEECHER (we should hear more about that one!); and anyone who works for the City should be hit for some infraction perpetrated on all of us through the notorious City Fathers (and Mothers); and, he hit DAN MOORE for giving entirely too much information regarding the activities of 36 years' of marriage (call DAN for more details at 555-NO WAY); a dollar was extracted for all who had taken a trip recently and CY LINDBERG for changing banks --we think that was an employment alteration; and BARRY KRAMER for pushing the 'Two Buck Chuck' wine that may be obtained at Trader Joe's And,

Our Weekly Program Introduced by ORPHALEE SMITH, CHRISTY JOHNSON (a very talented young lady-married!), a teacher at Bellingham High School, discussed her role as a teacher in Economics, Math and History, and some of the innovative ways in which she passes on very important information to her students.  She was accompanied by an informative slide show, and it made all of us know that the High School is in good hands with the likes of CHRISTY. Well, she is off for additional studies at Stanford, and will be earning two Master's Degrees there!  Also, as a side note, CHRISTY won the National Junior Achievement Award as the most outstanding teacher in America - well, now, how about those apples!?

Looking Ahead
Sometimes it is good to take note of future Rotary events, and some of those would be the District Conference in Whistler, BC, in May of '06; the Membership Foundation Seminar on 15 October in Canada; and The Rotary Foundation Dinner on 18 November of 2005 -- you will receive more info regarding these events from the Podium.

How to get involved in Rotary
Many ways exist, such as attending the weekly meetings, being a good citizen and supporting our Community; donating to our own Club Foundation, working on being a Paul Harris Fellow by giving at least $100 per year as a Sustaining Member; get involved with one of the Club's Committees and supporting the activities therein; buy a raffle ticket -- half of that money goes to the Rotary Foundation-- the other half to the winner, and ...Hands on Projects. It is great to support all that Rotary offers, and many of us do with our dollar contributions--however, the 'hands on projects' are just as rewarding if not more so. Recently, we assisted in painting three complete rooms at the Interfaith Coalition Transition House in Fairhaven (Harris Street) and yesterday (8/30), we put together $2,500 worth of playground equipment for the Whatcom Center of Early Learning (the $2,500 were monies that our Club donated to them). These are two examples of HANDS ON PROJECTS that we have accomplished this Rotary Year. However, only four of us showed up for the first painting venture (ART RUNE STRAND, ORPHALEE SMITH, TERRY BEARDSLEY and STAN DYER). The Playground venture included just five Rotarians (DICK STARK, UN REIN UNREIN, ROGER LONG, TERRY BEARDSLEY and STAN DYER). If you want to have a certain enjoyment and a feeling of accomplishment, why not volunteer for one of the next 'Hands on Projects'? The painting just took 4 hours - the Playground Assembly just took 90 minutes--time well spent in working with our Community.

Respectfully submitted, Stan Dyer
