Program
Tim McEvoy introduced Debbie Granger, our liaison for student scholarships at Squalicum High School.

Debbie explained that our club is now giving scholarships through the "Dollars for Scholars" program, which will make our money go further and simplify the process, while still allowing us to keep the same criteria we had before.  Dollars for Scholars is a national network of more than 1,200 grassroots scholarship foundations throughout the United States. Last year, Dollars for Scholars chapters raised more than $58.3 million ($29 million went to scholarships for more than 35,000 students, and the remainder went to endowment funds for future scholarships). The common element in Dollars for Scholars chapters is community-based fundraising for scholarships awarded to local students.  Besides scholarships, some chapters offer academic support programs, mentoring and tutoring programs, and help securing grants and loans.

Whatcom County has seven chapters.  Our chapter is growing; last year it provided 36 scholarships, this year it will be 75.  The benefit to students is that it is one application / one deadline for all the possible scholarships.

Kaitlin (Caitlin?) Peterson, graduate of Squalicum and a scholarship recipient, talked about her goals for college.  She was a 3.9 GPA student who will be going to UW to study molecular biology.  Her culminating Girl Scout project involved donating dental supplies at migrant worker camps.

Respectfully Submitted,
Stowe Talbot
