Program
Tim McEvoy introduced Misty Nikula, a science teacher of 4-6 grades at Whatcom Day Academy. She has won the "Middle School Science Teacher of the Year" award. This past summer she took a trip to the Russian Kuril Islands on a scientific expedition. The expedition was called the Kuril Biocomplex Project, to study the previous 5,000 years of cultural, ecological, geological and climate history of these islands. She and 20 other scientists lived aboard a ship as they traveled around the Kuril Islands, shuttling to shore every day in a zodiak boat to conduct their experiments. On the trip Misty worked both as a teacher (sending reports to update her website for her students) and also a scientist. Among her duties was to take topographical surveys, and do digs into the ground to look for evidence of past tsunamis. They scientists sorted through ancient garbage piles (called middens) left by native groups over the past few thousand years. The Islands used to belong to Japan, but were claimed by Russia after WWII. Evidence of old Soviet military bases. Beautiful scenery. Interesting Russian culture.
