  • Eddie said please stay tuned for news on how we can all contribute to the Bellingham Food Banks’ upcoming Thanksgiving turkey drive.
  • Steve Swan talked about the recent disturbance at Laurel Park Saturday night.  Most of the WWU community are outraged by the behavior; some participants were students, but many were not.  The University will learn and improve from the events.
  • Sue Sharpe said November 14th is National Philanthropy Day.  The WA chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) will be holding their annual luncheon on Thursday, November 14 at the Westin in downtown Seattle. Our own Mike Hammes will be recognized as “Philanthropist of the Year”, so a bus has been chartered to carry all Bellinghamsters that want to witness the honoring of Mike in Seattle that day.  Pleas see Sue to join the group!  The bus will leave about 10am and be back by around 3pm that day.

Program
Assistant DG Orphalee Smith introduced our District 5050 Governor Denis Boyd.  Denis grew up in Cranbrook, BC.  He studied music, before embarking on a career as a psychologist and counsellor.  Hobbies include walking, photography and fine scotch.  He and wife Maureen reside in Coquitlam, BC and have two grandchildren.
The most important role of District Governor is to visit and get to know all 56 clubs, and to inspire them in their good work.  Clubs should be striving in all “Five Avenues of Service”:
  1. Club Service
  2. Community Service
  3. Vocational Service
  4. Youth Service
  5. International Service
District 5050 extends from just south of Everett, WA across the international border to the city of Hope, BC.  There are fifty-eight clubs and a total membership of just over 2,700.  Our motto:  50% American, 50% Canadian, 100% Rotarian!

Maureen Boyd told us about the Annual District Conference (May 2-4, 2014) to be held this year at Chateau Whistler, open to all Rotarians.  $125/night for room, $295/registration.  The International Rotary Conference will be held in June , 2014 in Sydney, Australia.
Denis, with Christine’s help, recognized three “unsung heroes” in our club:  Harold Scott, Stowe Talbot, and Stan Dyer.  Each were awarded a Canadian-American Rotary pin.

Respectfully submitted,
Stowe Talbot
